As women were marking the one year anniversary of the Women's March, the real Rosie the Riveter passed away on Saturday January 20th. She had a long life and the story of her rediscovery is quite fascinating. When the NY Times article came out, friends and family began sending it to me, which was considerate and didn't surprise me as Rosie related things are sent to me quite a bit after my New Yorker Cover. But it wasn't until I read the article in full, that I realized I was mentioned in the piece. I am happy and surprised to be included. And it was a nice full circle moment as I got my start illustrating for The NY Times.
Over the summer I was asked by Ply magazine to create an illustration of a comical take on an end of days fiber bunker. They gave me a color pallet to work from and I was off and running. This was really fun to make. Since creating this painting, I took a spinning class (the wool kind, not the workout kind) and I really love the rhythmic and tactile practice of working with wool. I think it will be a nice way to pass the winter months when my hands are missing digging in the dirt.
